Shahab Tolouie Trio (Cehia/Iran)

Shahab Tolouie - guitar, voice
Tomas Vychytil - guitar
Tomas Reindl - percussion

Shahab Tolouie belongs to the group of musicians who derive inspiration from the traditional music of their native lands. For Shahab, this means combining traditional Persian elements with traditional Spanish flamenco.
His early interests ranged from the electric guitar and some modern music, such as Jazz and rock, to the use of traditional Persian instruments, the study of dervish music and an appreciation for the unique, varying sounds of the traditional music of Iran's diverse regions. While this wide musical experience gave him a taste and respect for many different styles, soon his musical journey began to lead him personally and professionally back to a career in acoustic music with deep Persian roots.
Shahab was very fortunate to have the opportunity to expand his knowledge and develop his talent through contact with some of the best Iranian musical masters of his time. One of these mentors was the legendary Iranian composer and singer of traditional music, Master Shahram Nazeri. This intense influence did not diminish his interest in flamenco, however, it continued to grow and profoundly affect him to the point that, following his graduation from high school, he departed for Seville, Spain. There he studied his flamenco master course, attaining the highest level of achievement, "Nivel Alto."
After returning from Spain, Shahab was recognized by "The House of Music of Iran" as one of the best Iranian guitar players.  He was home, with honors and awards, but more importantly, blessed with additional knowledge and experience that inspired new insight and a bright, shining idea. He was now able to recognize important similarities and differences, great and subtle, between Persian and Spanish music. The fusion of Flamenco and Persian music became his goal and now defines his distinct style "Ethno Flamenco."
As a multi-instrumentalist, Shahab incorporates in his compositions different traditional Persian instruments such as the Setar, Laud, Mandola, Daf and Dammam, along with the Flamenco Guitar. His most important instrument, however, is his voice. Powerful and dynamic, it is flavored with a special richness typical of eastern vocalists. When combined with his unique manner of singing, that voice is an essential and very expressive part of his musical presentation.
Tomas Reindl percussionist, performer, and composer began as a rock drummer but switched to jazz and ethnic percussion later. Tomas Reindl studied percussion at the Pilsen Conservatory with jazz percussionist Ivan Audes, studied tabla in India with the outstanding tablist Mata Prasad Mishra and Sanju Sahai, Arabic drums with Hearn Gadbois from New York and now plays various kinds of percussion and ethnic instruments - indian tabla, Arabic and African drums, didjeridoo, dulcimer, etc.
On stage he augments his brilliant authentic tabla playing with simultaneous didgeridoo and Tibetan overtone singing, as well as taking advantage of modern "live-looping" techniques and virtual drums/percussion to kick his performance dynamic into the 21st century.
Tomas Vychytil is an active guitarist and studio musician. He is well known by collaborating with many famous Czech musicians such as Yvonne Sanchez, Lubomir Nohavica, David Kraus, Ester Kocickova, Ivan Myslikovjan etc. He is also a successful composer. Many of his compositions were used by different Czech theaters.

www.triodenbas.com

Arnaud Rouanet (tenor saxophone, clarinet, sampler, voice)
Samuel Bourille (keyboards, Fx, voice)
Yoann Scheidt
(drums, trombone, voice)

This trio is the winner of Jazz Migration Contest 2010, Conferred by the AFIJMA (the Association of Innovative Jazz and Contemporary Music Festivals) and the FSJ (Federation of Jazz Venues)  “They mix humor, jazz standards, electronic samples, and sometimes - psychedelic approach straight out of Zappa or Floyd, and hummed samba rhythms. The ambiance was hot and the arrangements were ingenious.”   Sina Mirabdolbaghi - Dauphine Libere - March 2010 Trio d’en Bas was founded in 2003. It is the result of a progression of artistic projects that brought three unusual musicians together. Up to the founding of the Trio each of them spent years in  accumulating creative experiences playing with other musicians (some of the greatest musicians of French jazz:  Michel Portal, Louise Sclavis, Minvielle, Corneloup, Shepp,  Louiss,  Texier) so as  finally meet as members of the “transartistic” project of the Companie Lubat de Gasconha.  As time went on, their collaboration seemed the logical conclusion of their friendship and shared desire for artistic exploration and musical experimentation.“D’en bas” in French means “from below” – this name musicians had chosen for  proclamation of their own social connotations,  to which  the group make reference as a conscious choice to stay connected with a certain reality of the precariousness of life as an artist.
In  response  to  the  aggressiveness  of  the  contemporary  media’s  rhetoric  and  to  turn  publicity taglines on  their heads,  they coined a slogan of  their own,  that  roughly  translates as  “high-brow music  for low-brow France”, or the utopia of art that is accessible, yet complex and demanding.
The  Trio  proposes  a  repertory  of  music  that  is  rough  and it is a  joyfully  mix  of  original compositions and sudden  improvisations, angry political outbursts and unexpected humor, not  to mention the  revalidation of borrowed  themes  from  the annals of  jazz, French popular music, and sometimes even international pop... Over the past years the Trio d’en bas has navigated between concerts in their original trio form and hybrid forms born out of collaborations with other artists: music and circus, music and theater, music and painting, music and dance, music and video...
The Trio has attracted the attention of the powers so as serious radio,  fanzines that focus on  jazz and other amplified music, or simply on  listeners who  enjoy  the music  that  the  Trio  is more  than happy to supply to curious and attentive ears.

Didier Malherbe - doudouk, soprano saxophone…
Loy Ehrlich - gumbass, keyboards, kora…
Steve Shehan - percussion, drum set, djembe…

Great masters of this trio are widely acclaimed thanks to their contribution in a world music culture.
“There simply is no other band producing such music - immerse yourself!”
… “trio of adventure-seeking multi-instrumentalists who are adroit at freeing both your mind and your body.
As a trio of multi-instrumentalists, the sonic possibilities are endless and exhilarating. There is an enchanting quality so pervasive you may feel like the fourth member of this trio, as Didier leads another magical musical tour into uncharted lands.”
“After  the  success of « Utopies » and « Baldamore »  (50 000 albums  sold) and having been awarded  the prestigious Prize ‘Victoires de la Musique Jazz’ in 2008, Hadouk Trio is back with a new album, taking us a step further towards and into an ethereal world. Following in the footsteps of Hermann Melville and Saint Exupery, Hadouk give us escapism. Welcome aboard Air Hadouk! Fly ‘Aerozen’ on a hedonistic interplanetary flight to emerging destinations.
The line of sight: The horizons where external influences and intimacy meet, and from which point the continents redraw themselves exploring the beginning of new instrumental metamorphoses. Thus the khen, the Laotian mouth organ, is wrapped in electrical energy, the hang, a mix between a steel drum and a gamelan, enters into the world of chromaticism; the doudouk steps into of the shoes of jazz, le hajouj, a bass originally from the desert made from camels skin becomes a piccolo, heightening the tone; the appearance of the bahu flute, with its free Chinese reed, creates a wave of movement. Aiming at the azure, Hadouk purifies the lines, becoming lighter and rising up into the atmosphere. Swings and loops, high voltage rhythms and gliding harmonies, our 3 co-pilots opt for free style. But they also know how to help you land gently with no turbulence. Enjoy your flight!” (Nemo music)

” (Nemo music)

Harri Stojka Gipsy Swing Quartet (Austria, Franta)

Harri Stojka - guit
Claudius jelinek - guit
Karl Sayer - double-bass
Heimo Wiederhofer
- brush snare

“Viennese guitarist Stojka and his band-mates revitalize the ‘30s “Hot Club of France” jazz-gypsy vibe… Stojka is a force to be reckoned with!” By Glenn Astarita.
One of Austria's greatest jazz musicians has musical roots that run deep: He comes from a Roma Gipsy family that surrounded him with rhythms and harmony before he could even talk.
His discovery of the music of Django Reinhardt, when he was young, had reflected later at all his artistic triumphs.
He had made the irrefutably compelling effort, before he was appreciated by press and public worldwide, as a worthy successor of his lifelong idol Django Reinhardt.
Harri Stojka played numerous concerts, had gained appreciation of public around the world, recorded 16 CD albums in Europe and America, and nowadays the press puts his name near the name of Django.
After his CD was recorded by Gipsyland Studios, Vienna, Austria (09/2004), he was declared the most outstanding Gipsy jazz guitarist worldwide.
In 2005, the magazine “Concerto” named Harri Stojka “Best Musician in the category Jazz National”.
In 2006, the CD “A Tribute to Gipsy Swing” was edited in New York, but in Germany, renowned jazz legends nominated it within only a week for the “German Music Critics Prize”.

The philosophy behind Stojka's music is pure fun and the joy of making music. Even though Harri Stojka has already made a number of recordings, live concerts remain the most important aspect of his artistic activities.
He has played at many festivals, among them, the legendary jazz festival in Montreux, the Khamoro Festival in Prague, the Sziget Festival in Budapest, the famous Django Reinhardt Memorial Festival in Augsburg, the Graz Jazz Festival, the Salzburg Jazz Festival, the jazz festival in Jakarta, Detroit Jazz Festival, the Syracuse Jazz Festival, the Gipsy Swing Festival in Anger, the Sonsdhiver Festival in Paris , the Musiquat Festival in Tunis.

Quartet is famous for their stirring interpretation of John McLaughlin’s Mahavishnu Orchestra. The grand master himself, John McLaughlin, dedicated liner notes to the four musicians that virtually abound with superlatives.
“From the first note I was struck by the way this group has 'appropriated' my music and made it their very own. They even got the atmosphere which was present all those years ago.
The other aspect that touched me deeply was the importance they attach to the improvisation, and they do improvise ! This is no ordinary string quartet. The love of, and the dedication they have to their respective instruments is marvelous, and the fact they have taken what was electric jazz fusion music, fused it with their training in 'Classical' music, and conserved the 'electric' atmosphere is outstanding.
John McLaughlin
“This classical quartet surprises everyone with its ability to harness the robust dynamics, complexity, and high energy of jazz fusion as demonstrated by the iconic Mahavishnu Orchestra of the early ’70s. They’ve taken the spirit of TMO and created a distinctly and profoundly personal musical statement. Even McLaughlin himself is impressed: “This is no ordinary string quartet. From the first note I was struck by the way this group has ‘appropriated’ my music and made it their very own. They even got the atmosphere, which was presented all those years ago. Outstanding.”
Bernie Mallinger studied at the Music University Graz (Classical Violin/Concert), and in the USA (New School of Music, Manhattan School of Music, Juilliard School in New York).

Port Of Cultures - Valts Puce Quartet, Trigon, The Shin (Letonia, Moldova, Georgia)

«THE PORT OF CULTURES» is a joint project between Latvian, Georgian, Moldavian musicians, and this possibility is ensured by collaboration of Latvian, German, Moldavian and Georgian concert organizations. The Project is supported by General Direction for Education and Culture of European Union.
The aim of this activity is to confront diverse mentalities, cultural experiences, to create new cultural value oriented to new and growing European society.
As well as the possibility to join together Eastern and western cultures, as a thrilling challenge we regard the intention to show the approaching of Northern and Southern countries of the old continent. The meeting and cooperation of persons sharing the same views and values took place in the Port of Cultures.
This project united people from the spacious areas of Viking lads, Moldavian valleys to Caucasus Mountains, from level ground of the Baltic's to metropolis of Germany. The cultures are so different, and its energy is based on traditions. The intention of the project was to remark the different and common values and to create through it a new and powerful cultural value, because everyone of us, with our dreams and passion, with hopes and searches, can fulfill and join the space where the possibilities to communicate and create are never-ending.
All of us want to be happy in this world. This is the disposition which unites the mankind, and this tendency can not be bind with country or origin, geographical location, or historical development.
In the changing universe all the valuable is created through the power of thought and action, therefore in frames of Port of the Cultures different mentalities were joined for cooperation in the project .
Project had started in 2009 in Riga, where was presented the music program created in collaboration of Georgian – Latvian musicians. In June 2010, the musicians from Moldova (Trigon) and Latvia had told their music story in Riga and Chisinau. At this festival musicians from the participating countries had shared their musical visions and interpretations, creating the musical stories told in three different interpretations, which in diverse ways had reveal our divine humanity - "The secret of Harmony".
